What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the third largest healthcare profession in the world, closely behind medicine and dentistry. So why is it that most people know so little about it? We are all very familiar with what doctors and dentists do, but what about chiropractors? Much of our profession is shrouded in mystery and this is something we would like to change!

Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat neuromusculoskeletal disorders of the body. Let’s break that down. This means they are trained specifically to recognize issues with the nervous system, the muscular system and the skeletal system. This could be pain. Nerve pain like tingling or headaches…muscular pain like a tennis elbow or an aching back…skeletal pain like back pain or neck pain. But it could also be something else other than pain.

The core of your body’s structure are the bones and muscles. The nervous system weaves its way throughout every part of your body and is responsible for coordinating almost every bodily function, from the immune system to the digestive system and everything in-between. When you consider that chiropractors work with the neuro-musculo-skeletal system, it perhaps becomes clearer that they are in fact working with every part of your body!

The core of a chiropractor’s work is the spine. Much like the core of a dentist’s work is the teeth. But why? Because the spine is the place where the majority of your nervous system is housed. If the spine is supple, mobile and well-aligned, then the nerves of the nervous system can move and function uninhibited. But if there is an issue with the mobility or structure of the spine, then some of the nerves of the nervous system may become irritated or impacted, resulting in a range of issues - wherever those nerves travel to in the body is an area that could be affected. This is why many people report better sleep, better digestion and better mood after a chiropractic adjustment. Because their nervous system has been freed up and given the space to function as it needs to.

In order to free up the nervous system, chiropractors use a wide variety of manual techniques. Some techniques work directly on the spine to restore mobility and alignment, while some work on other body structures like the digestive organs, cranium or extremities. We call this treatment an adjustment. When you receive an adjustment from one of our chiropractors you will feel that we are attentive to many parts of your body, in addition to having a chat with you about your mental and emotional health. Every facet of the body and the person is important to us.
