Our chiropractic techniques

Did you know that in the world of chiropractic, there are almost 200 different techniques?! Although all chiropractors ultimately have the same shared goal when it comes to giving an adjustment, their route to getting there may look, and feel, quite different.

Gert and Chloe trained at the AECC in Bournemouth, a world-renowned chiropractic college with a solid undergraduate program promoting diagnostic ability with comprehensive medical knowledge. You can be sure that when you see a chiropractor who graduated from AECC that they are excellent diagnosticians. However, in our opinion, the introduction to different chiropractic techniques was more limited, which is why you would often see us nose-deep in the library reading about yet another approach! We were keen students when it came to refining our technical skills, and we could be found, pretty much every morning at 8am in the adjusting room perfecting our techniques! Practice certainly does make perfect!

After graduation, we still wanted to learn more, and over the last 10 years have literally travelled the globe to discover different chiropractic techniques. We have now been able to distil down everything we have learnt into our own integrated approach, which is unique to Continuum Chiropractic.

The foundation of our approach is known as Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT). This is a technique that was developed by Major Betrand Dejarnette who as both an osteopath and a chiropractor was a pretty smart guy! He spent his life studying the body and came up with a system that is very detailed and specific. His technique uses an indicator-based protocol to pick up distortions in the pelvis, spine, cranium, viscera and extremities: so basically everything from head to toe! We have spent years studying this technique, having started in our first year of university. It is a way of working that is appropriate for everyone, no matter your age or level of pain. It is largely recognised as being extremely gentle and non-invasive, and as such is a very pleasant type of adjustment to receive.

Of course we are also passionate chiropractors who strongly believe in the philosophy that small imbalances in the skeletal system can strongly impact the functioning of the rest of the body. For this reason we also use what we call manual adjustment techniques to correct any misalignments in the spine to restore proper function to your body. These are the specific corrections which are commonly associated with a small click or popping sound when they release. We have studied and mastered more than a dozen different methods to adjust the spine and now choose to use an integrated approach of these to get the best results.

Building on the basis of our chiropractic technique, we each use aspects of functional neurology (considering the specific role of the brain in pain, disease and poor function), nutrition and manual muscle testing (to gather specific information from your body). We are also astute diagnosticians by training, which means we are always aware of potential red flags in your medical history and are very competent at referring you to another healthcare professional where necessary.

As you may know, we also each have completed extensive training in specific specialisms, such as sport, paediatrics and nutrition, which you can read about in our future blog posts :-)
