Book launch: Finding their feet

This month we are very excited to celebrate the release of a wonderful new book by our friend and colleague, Bernie Landels!

“Finding their feet” is a fascinating and accessible book which links together the anatomical importance of the feet with the development and maturation of the infant nervous system. It is packed with useful exercises for parents and up-to-date information to help us all to better understand our feet. We are very proud at Continuum Chiropractic to be hosting Bernie’s book launch later this month and would be delighted to welcome you to meet her and discover more about her wonderful book!

Chloe first met Bernie in a what can only be described as a serendipitous moment. Following a rather muddy walk in the local village with toddler Luca, she decided to take off his shoes so he could pop back in the sling before walking home. With Luca perched on a compost bin, who should walk out from her back gate but Bernie! They started chatting about childrens’ shoes and before they knew it, they discovered that they had such a lot in common, both professionally and personally.

Here’s a little more of Bernie’s story…

“It was during the last big lockdown that a friend suggested I write a book. I’d never even considered this as a possibility before, so off I set exploring various topics! Of course it would have to have a body, health and foot flavour as that is my area of expertise. Having been a practitioner for over 25 years, how could I bring my knowledge to people in an accessible and interesting way?

As I researched the topic further it became clear that if I was to really make a difference to people’s lives I had to go back to the very beginning of life and get the newest little feet on the right path to success. I had no idea that I would have so much to learn about the early development of the human body and that the process of writing my book would take me on such a journey!

It was actually an X-ray of an infant foot that really convinced me this was what I needed to write about. I hadn’t thought about the fact that bones take time to grow and a child’s foot does not fully mature until they are about 15 years old. It became very clear from that point that instead of writing yet another book for fellow professionals, I really needed to target my book at parents, as they are the ones in the very best position to nurture and guide their child’s development from the feet up. To really master this topic I dove head first into anatomy, neurology and physiology. I explored the vital connection of the brain to the foot. I deepened my knowledge of primitive reflexes and of normal infant development. When I discovered that Chloe shares a passion for this work also, I was thrilled! We had many great conversations over cups of coffee and on barefoot walks, which helped evolve my thinking.

‘Finding Their Feet - Every parent’s guide to milestones and movement’ describes a baby’s journey from the womb to walking. It is my hope and my aim that parents take this knowledge and help guide their children to put their best feet forwards.”
