The Continuum Concept

Many people have been asking us why we chose the name ‘Continuum’ for our practice. It may seem an odd choice when most chiropractors pick names that say something about back pain or spines!

For us, the name of our practice is incredibly important. We want it to resonate with our life and our work philosophy, and to stimulate others to ponder on its meaning. We want it to be about more than what we do, but also to represent who we are and what values we stand for.

For us, the story of our name goes way back. The year 2008, when we started our studies as chiropractors and first met one another in the beautiful seaside town of Bournemouth. Chloe’s mum, an acupuncturist and nutritionist, passed down a book to Chloe which she had personally loved and deeply resonated with in her career. It was called The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff. Chloe, who had originally launched into a career as a chiropractor with a love for animals and a drive to work with horses, read this book and was so taken by its message, that her whole career vision took a different turn. Inspired by the writer’s observations of human culture and child-rearing in particular, Chloe dove head first down the path of chiropractic paediatrics, and has never turned back. Years later, when Chloe and Gert were expecting their first baby, Chloe passed the same book on to Gert. He was also very taken with the author’s observations on health, society and child-raising. When our son Luca was born in early 2020, there was no doubt for us that he would be nurtured by us in a way that is continuous with this philosophy.

So there you go – our own introduction to The Continuum Concept. So how did we get from there, to deciding to name our chiropractic practice after the book all these years later?

It’s quite simple really. The Continuum Concept is a book all about life.  Jean Liedloff was an evolutionary anthropologist, who spent 2 ½ years living deep in the Amazonian rainforest among an ancient tribe of Stone-age Indians. She observed every facet of their lives, from birth to death, and the experience radically opened her eyes to the stark contrast to our western ways of living. Eating nourishing and local foods, engaging in daily and varied movement, babywearing infants so they can be part of group activities, extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping as a family and community spirit – were all part and parcel of tribe life. The result? Happy, healthy and fulfilled individuals.

We are chiropractors that are passionate about every facet of health. We, much like Jean Liedloff, believe that humans are designed to be healthy, happy and contended, but see that our western lifestyles get in the way of this goal. Never before has it been so important to listen to our bodies, trust our instincts and follow our innate wisdom. This is why we chose the name. Because all of health and life is on a continuum, and we want to be a part of helping you reconnect with it.
