Chiropractic and pregnancy

Please join us in congratulating chiropractor Chloe Powell, who after years of postgraduate study, has just achieved her postgraduate certification in perinatal chiropractic!

Nurturing women throughout their pregnancy has always been a passion for Chloe, and her studies have now equipped her with an even more diverse set of skills and techniques to guide and support women as they carry and birth their babies into the world. More and more women and birth providers are discovering the many benefits associated with chiropractic care throughout pregnancy and for optimal birth preparation, and here’s why…

Chiropractic care in pregnancy is a wonderful way to support the normal physiological function of both mother and baby. Nurturing and protecting her growing baby is what a woman’s body is designed to do, and the role of chiropractic is to gently support this process, by guiding the body towards optimal balance and function. There is still so much magic in pregnancy that we are yet to fully understand, but what we do know is that a woman’s body undergoes dramatic changes on all levels as she journeys toward motherhood.

Chiropractic is concerned with the structural relationship between the spine, pelvis, and nervous system. During pregnancy a woman’s body experiences very rapid change, such as increased weight gain, changes in posture, and production of hormones which relax ligaments that normally stabilise the body. These changes are of course vital for the growth and arrival of baby, but they can also interfere with other areas of life. Common conditions from these shifts include aches and pains, digestive irritation, sleep issues and hormonal imbalances. There can even be disruptions to normal birth through a less optimal position of baby in utero, or issues with the onset and progression of birth due to a structural or nervous system issue.

Chiropractic can help make pregnancy more comfortable, more enjoyable, and prepare the body for an easier, safer birth.

Chiropractic care is a gentle, non-invasive approach to correcting and stabilizing the spine and pelvis. A well-balanced body is much better able to adapt to the changes of pregnancy and to nurture an environment where baby can grow and develop optimally. Many women choose to use chiropractic care to optimise the positioning of their baby if they happen to be in the breech, or another less optimal position. The Webster Technique is a widely regarded specific chiropractic adjustment to the pelvis, which helps to restore correct function to the body, and therefore facilitate more space for baby to move. The result of which is often a change in baby positioning to one which is more optimal for birth.

Completely safe throughout pregnancy, chiropractic care helps the body to work optimally, enhance the pregnancy experience of both mother and baby, and potentially improve the course and progression of birth. Many patients tell us how chiropractic made their pregnancy more enjoyable and their birth shorter and easier.

After baby arrives, chiropractic is a wonderful way to help the body recover and adapt to the new physical and emotional challenges of motherhood.  Many women also bring their new baby to chiropractor Chloe to get checked and see if chiropractic can help with any challenges like breastfeeding, digestion, comfort, sleep, and immune function.

Having experienced some discomfort herself during pregnancy, Chloe absolutely knows what a difference chiropractic care can make to a woman’s experience and to the progression of labour and birth. Chloe was adjusted on the same day that her little boy was birthed beautifully at home, and he received his first gentle adjustment just minutes after being born. Chloe’s intention is to help more women experience the joy and magic of pregnancy, and to prepare for a gentle and empowering birth. Motherhood is something which changes and shapes you to your very core, and the more prepared your body is for the journey, the better for you, your baby, and the whole family.
